Education Coordinator Location Kenai, AK : The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Education Coordinator position at the Wildwood Correctional Complex (WCC) located in Kenai, Alaska. Watch Alaska DOC's video here: DOC 30 Second Cut What you will be doing: You will serve as an important member of the Wildwood Correctional Complex (WCC) team to further support our mission and culture, by providing education and tools to better our inmates which directly contributes to their success upon reentry into the community. Under the general direction of the Probation Officer 3, the Education Coordinator position is responsible for teaching and assisting the prisoner population at WCC with obtaining a high level of education, including work with Adult Basic Education, the GED, vocational training, post-secondary education, and cognitive self- change. You will counsel prisoners in areas of career choice, educational opportunities, and vocational trainings to develop individual career development plans for their successful reentry. The working environment you can expect: You will be working at Wildwood Correctional Complex, which is approximately three miles north of Kenai and houses approximately 470 prisoners. Correctional Facilities are operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Your normal hours will be Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm. After demonstration of competent performance an alternative schedule may be agreed upon. You will teach in classrooms with educational and interactive technology and have a private office to conduct your lesson plans. Your daily work will include teaching and assisting prisoners with educational pursuits, cognitive behavioral, parenting and reentry programs.   • Working knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel);
  • Positive attitude and ability to be flexible despite a high-speed environment with rapidly changing priorities and interruptions;
  • Effective communicator: Demonstrates open, honest, and respectful written and verbal communication with people of all cultural backgrounds, ages and levels of education;
  • Self-Starter who is well organized with a strong work ethic;
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of planning, teaching and evaluating the assigned educational subject matter area or specialized field of education, curricula development techniques, and basic educational budgeting.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in education, counseling, social or behavior sciences or a closely related field; AND One year of journey level paraprofessional experience in educational or vocational education programs or services. This experience is equivalent to work such as the Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant 2 or Education Program Assistant, and similar classes with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent with another employer. Additional qualifying work experience may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis. Special Note: An extensive background investigation will be required for successful applicants. Working with inmates requires care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk. Some positions perform activities that require bending, crouching, walking or standing for long periods of time. Some work activities involve discomfort or unpleasantness such as moderate noise levels, vibration, dust, dirt or odors associated with operation of equipment and/or tools in performance of duties.
